About Internet Enablers
Internet Enablers is a not-for-profit recognition initiative established in Australia to honour the people whose vision, technical leadership, community commitment, and long-term contributions have helped shape the Internet across the Asia-Pacific region.
The Internet is not only built through technology. It is built through people, communities, trust, collaboration, and shared knowledge. Across Asia-Pacific, individuals have played essential roles in developing Internet infrastructure, strengthening Network Operator Groups, supporting Internet Exchange Points, advancing technical capacity, contributing to policy and coordination, and making the Internet more open, stable, secure, and accessible.
Internet Enablers exists to recognise, document, preserve, and promote knowledge of these contributions so that the people behind the Internet’s development are visible, remembered, and celebrated.
Our Mission
Our mission is to recognise individuals who have significantly contributed to Internet development in Asia-Pacific and to preserve their stories as part of the region’s Internet history.
We aim to promote a global, open, stable, and secure Internet that is accessible to everyone, while supporting the communities, technical networks, and knowledge-sharing platforms that make sustainable Internet development possible.
Internet Enablers also seeks to support and strengthen local and regional technical communities, including Network Operator Groups, through collaboration, knowledge exchange, capacity building, research, publications, workshops, and other activities that advance Internet development for public benefit.
Why Internet Enablers Was Created
Many of the most important contributions to Internet development happen quietly. Engineers, operators, trainers, community organisers, researchers, policymakers, and volunteers often work behind the scenes for years, building infrastructure, mentoring others, improving coordination, and strengthening technical communities.
These contributions are often visible in the networks, institutions, and communities they leave behind, but the individuals themselves may not always receive the recognition they deserve.
Internet Enablers was created to address this gap. It provides a platform to recognise people whose efforts have made a lasting difference to Internet development across Asia-Pacific, while helping future generations understand how the Internet in the region was built and strengthened.
Recognition Categories
Internet Enablers recognises contributions at three levels: Regional, Sub-regional, and National. These categories describe the scope of a person’s impact, not a ranking of importance.
Regional
Regional recognition honours individuals whose contributions have had significant impact across the Asia-Pacific region. This may include work that shaped regional Internet infrastructure, technical communities, policy coordination, capacity building, or collaboration across multiple economies.
Sub-regional
Sub-regional recognition honours individuals whose work has strengthened Internet development across a recognised sub-region, such as South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, or the Pacific.
National
National recognition honours individuals whose contributions have had a significant and lasting impact within a specific economy or national Internet community.
Recognition Scope
Recognition scope helps explain where a person’s contribution was felt. For regional recognition, the scope may be Asia-Pacific. For sub-regional recognition, it may be South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, or the Pacific. For national recognition, the scope may be a specific economy.
This distinction allows Internet Enablers to recognise both local leadership and broader regional impact. A person may come from one economy but have contributed across a much wider community. The recognition record therefore separates a person’s home economy from the scope of their contribution.
Selection and Recognition Process
Internet Enablers recognises individuals based on demonstrated contribution, long-term impact, and evidence of service to Internet development and community strengthening.
Nominations may be assessed against factors such as:
- Contribution to Internet infrastructure, operations, or technical development.
- Leadership in Network Operator Groups, Internet Exchange Points, or technical communities.
- Support for capacity building, training, mentorship, research, or knowledge sharing.
- Contribution to Internet policy, coordination, governance, or enabling environments.
- Impact on digital inclusion, community development, resilience, stability, or security.
- Recognition or recommendation from peers, community members, or sector leaders.
The recognition process is intended to be thoughtful, independent, and based on meaningful contribution rather than visibility alone. Internet Enablers seeks to recognise individuals whose work has helped others connect, learn, build, collaborate, and benefit from the Internet.
Governance and Independence
Internet Enablers is being established as an Australian not-for-profit company limited by guarantee.
The organisation is governed by a Board of Directors responsible for managing the company in accordance with its constitution, applicable Australian law, and its charitable purpose. Directors are required to act honestly, in good faith, and in the best interests of the organisation.
Internet Enablers is designed to operate for public benefit, including advancing education, supporting community development, promoting technical knowledge and capacity building, and supporting the development of Internet infrastructure and related technologies throughout Asia-Pacific.
